Today is Jack Frost day. I bet that a lot of you just thought of that line from The Christmas Song- "... Jack Frost nipping at your nose." didn't you?
Tell me about Christmas carols. Reindeer, talking snowmen, chestnuts roasting, riding in sleighs. Those, at least, are pretty easy for a kid to understand and sing. But the songs about Christ? Not so easy.
Last Sunday was our stake program, Christmas in the Grove. Brandi sang in the children's choir. (You know there will be video soon) She was reading a Christmas book to me a couple of days before that. At the end of the book were the words and music for the song, Oh Little Town of Bethlehem. She read me the words and then said that she would be singing it in the program. I asked her what the song was about. She didn't have a clue. So I explained it to her and that started me thinking about our Christmas carols.
I have a lot of thoughts rushing around in my head about my most beloved carols and their meaning. I also keep thinking of the way kids mess up the words that they don't know or understand so that they make sense. None of that is coming out of my keys in a way that I want to post. So I will let it stew a bit longer.
In the mean time, tell me two of your favorite Christmas songs
1. Your favorite kiddie Christmas song and why (you know, reindeer, talking snowmen, that sort)
2. Your favorite reverent hymn and why.
In the mean time, I'll leave you with my favorite reverent hymn, sung by Luciano Pavarotti
Indeed.

12 comments:
1. Um...Let It Snow, maybe.
2. O Holy Night. Definitely.
1. Also "Let it snow!" by Dean Martin
2. "Ave Maria" or "Panis Angelicus" by Luciano Pavarotti (I can't actually decide) and "Pie Jesu" by Sarah Brightman.
Are we allowed more than one choice.
1. Silver Bells or Pretty Paper
2. O Holy Night by John Berry and The Man From Galilee by Cristy Lane ( discovered this one last year and love it)
Dad
That's hard. I guess my favorite kid one is Frosty the Snowman...but I'm not really into the kid ones. My favorite hymn one is the Hallelujah chorus! But then there are soooo many. The one in The Grinch really touches my heart every time...as does the one from Polar Express. sigh.
Ok, I have to have a disclaimer on this one, this is my most memorable one...Dad would always sing 'Everybody knows a turkey' and just stop. I hear it that way in my head every time & think of Dad!
1)Jingle Bell Rock (especially Animal from Muppets version) or Santa Baby...
2)Hallelujah Chorus or Away in a Manger (Primary book) or While Shephards watched Their Flocks...
Liva, good to have you here. You'll have to tell us a bit about Latvia sometime- how you celebrate and all that good stuff. But also tell us a bit about you as well.
and you can never go wrong with Pavarotti, can you?
Loretta- I had forgotten that and now I am laughing so hard remembering.
Dad- yes, you are allowed more than one. I am tempted to go back to last year and just change the date on all my favorite song posts. I have so many and I never got to all of them last year.
Gaynell- The Hallelujah chorus. Love it. Did you know it was actually written as an Easter hymn? Get the album called "The Majesty and Glory of Christmas" google the title and you will find it. My all time favorite Christmas album.
Tawnya- I thought everyone in the family would pick O Holy Night
Anyone else? Come on, let us know your favorites
Actually, Oh Holy Night is one of my favorites, but everybody else said it so....I think it was from Sacrament meeting every year when growing up. Who was it that sang it? I can see him but can't get his name to surface.
and yes---my kids hear me sing it that way & tell them it's dad's fault. They say it sounds like something he would do!
Gene Huber. He switched off between O Holy Night and The Birthday of a King, both are favorites of mine.
I said to the kids the other day when O Holy Night was playing in the kitchen, "I bet Brother Miles sings this song Sunday in church" Brandi looked at me and said, "But he sings it every year!" I know and I love that he does. Reminds me of home.
What is this turkey song you are talking about?
The Christmas Song-
"Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe, will help to make the season bright..."
Rudolph the red nose reindeer for the kiddies song .. and Silent Night, Holy Night - always brings tears to my eyes! Maybe when my Dad sang it, it always brought tears to his eyes too (he passed away 7 years ago - oh my .. a long time ago now!)
1. Santa Claus is Coming to Town or Let It Snow
2. I Heard the Bells or Mary, Did You Know? (more of a pop song, but very, very touching)
