Today when I got up I was thinking about what I could use for my post today. I was really hoping and praying that something at church today would strike me in a different way, would become clearer to me and be something I could tell you about. Something did happen at church today, but it is not what I want to tell you. I will just tell you it first.
President Barbra B. Beck spoke in our ward today. We have a new family in our ward and they were our speakers. The husband's mom came to sit with the little kids while their parents spoke. Grandma just happened to be Sister Beck. I was wondering what it would be like to not be able to even go visit your children without giving a talk because if you are a general authority or a member of one of the general presidencies you just know you will be invited to "say a few words" and if you are a general authority you will have to sit on the stand- not your family.
Anyway, back to what I know today.
While I was getting dressed I turned on the t.v. to listen to a conference talk or devotional while I was getting ready. I like to do that to help get me in the right frame of mind for church, especially if I have had a not good morning. When I turned the t.v. on I am not sure what channel it was tuned to, but there was some kind of preacher giving a sermon to an auditorium of people. Usually I turn the channel right away but something he said caught my attention. He was talking about rebellion to the Lord's commandments. I think he was in the book of Acts but I am not sure. He had just finished reading a passage of scripture and he referenced Saul/Paul but it could have been any number of other places than Acts.
Anyway, he was talking about rebellion and this is what he said- "Partial obedience is disobedience and rebellion. The definition of rebellion is unacceptance and defience toward authority. It is an attempt to circumnavigate the rules."
He went on to say that when he reads the passage of scripture he had just read (before I joined in) that he was reminded to look at his own life and see what it was that he was doing or not doing to rebel against the Lord.
And what I know today is this. No matter how often I rebel by not obeying the Lord 100% in His commands , He is willing to give me another chance and I can try again. Even when what is important to Him is not immediately important to me and I justify why I don't do something. He still gives me another chance to learn and understand the importance.
I like to do yoga, but I stopped a few years ago when the pain in my back was more than I could bear. I would sretch and the pain would be almost excruciating. Even a modified pose was difficult. Not long after that I was diagnosed with Ankalosing Spondilitis, a form of arthritis, along with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Not fun. Even more not fun is the injections I have to give myself every week, as witnessed by the bruise on my leg from last Tuesday's injection. But it is better than being bed ridden with pain. Use of the medication and a change in my diet, (no sugar, artificial sweetners, white flour, and what we think of as processed foods), has given me the ability to remain mobile, allowed me to take up hiking on a small basis, and more importantly, freed me from the excruciating pain I used to live with every single hour of every single day. Now the pain is still there, but it is small and I can mostly ignore it if I make wise food choices and don't remain stationary for too long.
I have started doing yoga again. Just a small good morning, greet the day, get stretched routine, but I love it and when I feel so much better when I do. It is the same routine I did before and the first week it seemed hard, but now, five weeks later, I can see a difference. I am much more flexible and my muscles respond quicker and recover faster. And I just feel better.
The basic premise of yoga is to help one align your spirit with your body so they both want the same thing. In other words, one becomes cognizant of their body/mind and how they are working together. Or not. After each stretch you hold the "pose" for a couple of counts and then return to your starting position before the next pose. Your starting position is called center, the place you started, your grounding place, your roots.
The instructions for a pose are always followed by these words: "Come back to center".
The other morning as I was going through my routine in order to be stretched for my hike, these words struck me in a different light.
"Come back to Center". My starting point, my grounding place, my roots.
This I Know- if I remember where I started, Him that gave me life and salvation, and return to Him again and again in prayer and supplication, I will be able to remain grounded and strong and be able to face whatever comes my way.
Before I start I want to say that yesterday's post was not about my family but about me. Me and my insecurities. My expectations. My issues. And whether they came yesterday or not was not the point of the blog.
Which brings us to today's post
I know that not having family live close by has forced me to learn some things. Here are a few of those things:
I am stronger than I think
If I need to do something, I probably can. And if I don't know how to do it, I can learn it.
I am really not alone. Ever. And those times that I don't have family with me physically, I have family with me spiritually. And it is ok. Even during those times that I forget it and get all whiney
Ok, I just lost my train of thought because I stopped writing to go Donovan and Kristina's to celebrate Jordan's first birthday.
And here is something else that I know. I love Hunter and Jordan with a fierceness that I never, ever expected before they were born. And Kristina? The most amazing daughter-in-law ever and the best mom. Adding her to our family brought so much more than I could ever ask for. So what I know is this- adding people to my family does not decrease but only increases my capacity to love.
And because I lost my train of thought, I am going to end there, knowing that the Lord sent me a family to learn the meaning of love.
I woke up this morning and wondered if I was going to go to church or not.
It hasn't always been that way with me. For my entire life, if it was Sunday, I got up, got ready and went to church. No questions asked. That's just the way it was. (besides, my mom wouldn't let it be any other way)
But when I moved out of my parent's house and went to college, 2,000 miles away, I still went to church because by then it was not just the way it was, I had a testimony of the truthfullness of the gospel, of the love of the Savior for me and me for Him, of His divine atonement for my sins.
And I continued when I had children and I hoped, despite family circumstances, that I was instilling that same testimony and love in my children. But this morning when I realized that I was deciding whether I was going or not, I started thinking about that. Deciding whether to go or not? When did that start? And why? Because I realized that I have been making that decision every Sunday for a while now.
And then we had a combined Relief Societ/Priesthood meeting and it was about service and I really did not want to sit through that, because really? I just did not want to hear one more lesson on how if we do something nice for someone else, everything will turn out fine. Blah, blah, blah. But I would have had to gather everything and walk to the back of the room, past everyone, in order to get out, so I sat there.
Then the bishop said something.
"Never feel bad about seeking the reward- People get burned out when they continue doing good just for the sake of doing good. If you don't get the rewards- you get burnt out- so don't feel bad about seeking the rewards." (he did clarify that he was not talking about making sure people knew and gave you a high five or something, but the rewards from the Lord)
Yes. That is how I have been feeling. I don't want accolades, or for everyone to see and know, but there are some things that I would like just a teeny bit of reward for. You know all the times I have said, "but I am doing what you asked. I am reading my scriptures, I am going to church, paying my tithing, doing good things, trying to__________... Why do these bad things just keep piling up and why does nothing ever get better for me and my kids?"
I am not sure why I am telling you all this, other than it has been on my mind a lot lately and today even more.
But I do want you to know that I do know the gospel is true. I do know that Jesus lives and that He loves me. And if I continue on, He will bless me for my efforts.
We are studying The Old Testament in Sunday School this year. This is one of my favorite books of scripture. I am not a scholar, by any means, but when you understand this book of scripture, it opens all kinds of doors to understanding the rest of the scriptures. The history is phenomenal- I cannot even begin to fathom the age of events in this book.
Someday I would love to visit Old Testament lands and walk the same earth that these people, my brothers and sisters walked so long ago.
But, even if I never, ever make it there This I know:
I know that God lives and that He loves me. I know that He created this world and everything that is here. I know He created all things for a divine purpose and that purpose is to allow me to learn and grow and reach and stretch until I have been refined and learned to live and walk by faith. To trust Him. To believe Him. To turn to Him when I need help. I know He created the sun, the moon the stars. He created the waters and dry earth. The flowers, the trees, the plants, the fish and the birds. I know He created man in His image and gave him Eve to create families patterened after the family we knew and loved in our pre-earth life.
When you are mad at God for whatever reason, He will give you opportunities to repent.
The person causing most of your grief in life will continue, causing you to need to kneel down and ask for help and guidance. Or even to just say "I can't do it for one more second and I need help"
The Relief Society secretary will call and ask you to say the opening prayer if you are even entertaining thoughts about not going because of the above mentioned anger problem.
The talks in Sacrament meeting will all be on breaking the pride cycle.
The opening song in Relief Society will be one that always, always, ALWAYS touches your heart.
And you will be crying so hard that it is difficult to pray.
And then the lesson will be on Our Heavenly Father and the teacher will give you a note card and pencil and ask you to write down things you know about Heavenly Father.
And when you are done you will no longer be mad.
And so today I want you to know that I know this for sure,
My Heavenly Father loves me. He knows me. He cares about me. Even when I am whiny and mad about things in my life. He is wise and kind and knows more than I do. He loves perfectly. And someday I will understand. But for today, I know He is there.
